Troop 31 prides itself on its monthly themed campouts to a variety of locations. The majority of our campouts take place in Central PA, especially at Seven Mountains Scout Ranch; however, our recurring Big City campout gives Scouts the opportunity to explore places across the nation. The theme of each campout determines the activities, from sailing and cooking to late-night star walks. Most campouts span a weekend, with Scouts spending two nights in tents. Recently, here’s what our troop’s been up to.

Over 500 Scouts from troops across our district attended this Camporee, where Scouts had a chance to work on the American Heritage Merit Badge. To celebrate America’s upcoming 250th birthday, Scouts learned about everything from American government to the history of ironmaking in Central Pennsylvania.

Dark Skies Campout, Cherry Springs, February 20-22

Widely considered one of the seven best locations for stargazing worldwide, Cherry Springs provided the stunning natural setting for this unique campout. Scouts practiced their winter camping skills in the February chill and warmed up with campfire-cooked meals while waiting for night to fall and reveal the wonder of the nighttime sky. In spite of bad weather marring the view, the Scouts were able to enjoy their trip, spending time reading, cooking, and practicing proper axe techniques.

Holiday Campount, Seven Mountains Scout Ranch, December 5-7

This festive campout is a recurring event for our troop, held each December at Seven Mountains. Scouts look forward to spending the night indoors to stave off the winter chill and warm up with hot cocoa, group games, and meals cooked by the adult leaders. This year’s campout coincided with the December Court of Honor, where Scouts were recognized for all their hard work in the past four months and were awarded their merit badges and rank advancements.
