Scouting America features four High Adventure bases, or reserves set aside for troops to engage in the highest level of Scouting activities. Our troop aims to visit one High Adventure base or go on one equally thrilling adventure each year. The four bases are:
- Northern Tier in Minnesota, where Scouts canoe through the beautiful northern lakes and explore millions of acres of pristine wilderness;
- Sea Base in Florida, featuring scuba diving and sailing on an isolated island in the Florida Keys;
- Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, known for its multi-day desert backpacking trips and horseback riding programs;
- And the Summit-Bechdel Reserve in West Virginia, which prides itself on offering an enormous variety of outdoor activities from BMX biking to whitewater rafting.
This year, our troop will travel to Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada, for a week of canoeing and portaging through scenic wilderness.

This past summer, our troop travelled to West Virginia to participate in the Summit Experience, a weeklong taste-test of various outdoor activities. Scouts learned to skateboard at the Summit’s signature Action Park and practiced biking everywhere from scenic forest trails to high-level BMX courses. At nearby New River Gorge National Park, the Scouts spent a day whitewater rafting. Other activities included archery, riflery, and rock-climbing, as well as the classic Summit activity: ziplining through the forest canopy.
