One of the most iconic principles of Scouting is the practice of “cheerful service.” As Scouts, we strive to live the Scout Slogan of “Do a Good Turn Daily” on a variety of scales, from small random acts of kindness to the famous Eagle Scout service projects. Our troop provides frequent opportunities for Scouts to engage in community service at all of these levels.

The Eagle Scout Service Project

Likely the most well-known requirement to reach the highest rank in Scouting – Eagle Scout – is the completion of an Eagle Service Project. This requires Scouts to identify a problem or shortcoming in their community, develop a plan to address it, and then put that plan into action with the help of their fellow Scouts. Troop 31 has completed over 200 Eagle projects to benefit the community, many of which you’ve probably seen! Here are some of the most recent Eagle Scout Service Projects completed by our troop.

Cecilia S.: Trailhead Kiosks at Shaver’s Creek

Cecilia’s project involved the design, construction, and installation of four information kiosks at trailheads at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. Over the course of several workdays, Scouts created blueprints for the kiosks, cut out the individual pieces with the help of experienced adults, stained the wood, assembled the final products, and installed each kiosk at various trailheads. Shaver’s Creek employees will be able to use these to display important information to park visitors, including trail maps, seasonal information, park rules, and warnings.

Other service

It’s not just Eagle Scouts who take the lead in serving their community. Troop 31 is proud to uphold a longstanding legacy of cheerful service in State College. Recurring service projects in particular demonstrate our unwavering commitment to the ideals of Scouting. Each year, Scouts help beautify the local waterways at Watershed Cleanup Day; they keep our festivals clean as a part of the Arts Fest Green Crew; they collect donations for local food banks during the Scouting for Food weekends; and they strive, each and every day, to do a good turn.
